People who went away with their partner once or twice a year were more passionate and had more physical intimacy, sex and relationship satisfaction.
Dr John Coffey, of Arizona State University, said: “An experiential holiday with your partner may improve your love life even after the vacation is over.
“Our research found this held true no matter the length of a couple’s relationship.
“So whether you’ve been together one year or 30 years, travelling together and trying new things is one good way to maintain intimacy and passion.”
The research, published in the Elsevier journal Annals of Tourism Research Empirical Insights, looked at how going on holidays and what people did on them impacted their relationships.
Some 442 adults were asked about their experiences while on a trip and how they affected their sex lives during and afterwards.
They were asked what they had done together while on vacation, including if they had tried new food together or experienced a new culture.
Those who went away at least once a year and had more “self-expanding” experiences together also had higher levels of physical intimacy during and after they got back.
Researchers said taking more expansive vacations with your partner “may give couples the boost they are looking for in newer and long-term relationships”.
Dr Coffey said: “These experiences don’t need to be wildly adventurous if extreme activities aren’t your thing.
“Activities as simple as trying a challenging hike or a new local cuisine together are enough to explain the higher post-vacation passion.”
