Sam Taylor-Johnson, 57, says age gap with husband Aaron, 33, ‘doesn’t really matter’

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s director wife Samantha Taylor-Johnson has spoken out on their age-gap romance in a candid new interview.

Samantha, 57, brushed off critics when talking to The Guardian, saying it never shows up and “it doesn’t really matter”.

“We’re a bit of an anomaly, but it’s that thing: after 14 years you just think, surely by now it doesn’t really matter?” she told the publication when asked about their relationship.

Before marrying Aaron, now 33, back in 2012, the Fifty Shades of Grey director was married to art dealer Jay Jopling, 60, for a shorter amount of time.

“So, if you think of it in that way, then the age gap doesn’t really make any difference.
she insisted.

It comes just weeks after Aaron defended their relationship, reminding those with something to say that his career began much earlier than most.

Aaron scored his first acting gig at age six, a fact he told Rolling Stone UK fans need to remember.

“What most people were doing in their twenties, I was doing when I was 13,” he said.

“You’re doing something too quickly for someone else? I don’t understand that. What speed are you supposed to enjoy life at? It’s bizarre to me.”

The couple met in 2009 on the set of Nowhere Boy, a John Lennon biopic directed by Sam. At the time, Aaron was just 18 years old.

The duo have worked together more than once, releasing their film A Million Little Pieces in 2019, but Aaron points out that any criticism directed toward their work together hurts more than most.

“There’s a protectiveness that I feel; I think it’s really difficult. There’s also part of me that feels like if something didn’t work, I’m the one that’s responsible,” he explained.

“Sam is actually a great filmmaker and a wonderful storyteller. People will think there’s sort of a bias to me saying it, but I think when they see Back to Black [her upcoming project], everyone’s going to realise how fantastic a filmmaker she is.”

The couple share four children, Wylda, 13, and Romy Hero, 11, as well as Sam’s two daughter’s from her previous relationship, Angelica, 25, and Jessie, 15.
