One woman was faced with a bill of £45.39 after popping three loose brown onions in her basket.
Taking to Twitter, Lucy Cokes complained: “Sainsburys your loose onions are a tad too expensive for us!
“Couldn’t figure out why our shop was about £50 more than it usually is…took a while to spot why…”
James Smith saw his basket rocket by £30 after adding two onions.
He said: “No sainsburys I don’t want to spend £30 on 2 onions.
“That’s enough to make my eyes water!”
And Craig Goddard ditched his five onions after realising he would be charged more than £75 for them.
He moaned: “sainsburys Hey! Glitch on your website, or inflation gone mad?
“This appears to be telling me that a single onion costs £15.13…I wondered why my basket looked ridiculous, then realised that 5 onions was going to cost me over £75!! Promptly removed.”
Sainsbury’s has apologised and blamed a technical error with its website, telling unhappy customers: “I’m sorry the price is high on the site.
“You will be charged the correct price on the day of your delivery.”
