Roger Federer’s final moments as tennis star released in video ‘never intended for the public’

BEHIND-THE-SCENES footage of Roger Federer’s farewell event will be shown for the first time.

The sporting icon – an eight-time Wimbledon champion – retired from tennis after appearing at a tear-jerking Laver Cup exhibition in London in September 2022.

Camera crews followed him at the O2 Arena throughout the final days of his illustrious career.

And these images will form part of a feature-length documentary that will premiere this year on Prime Video.

It was originally meant to be a home video that was never intended for public viewing.

But it is supposed to capture Federer at his most vulnerable and candid self as he said goodbye to the sport and his fans.

Rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray – members of the tennis Big Four – have also contributed interviews.

Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia – who has made films about Ayrton Senna, Diego Maradona and Amy Whitehouse – is the brains behind this doc in his role as co-director and producer.

Swiss superstar Federer, 42, said: “Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends.

“During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments.

“But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public.

“However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey.”
