Rod Stewart’s shocking announcement that he is quitting Rock and Roll

Sir Rod Stewart, 78, has announced he is saying goodbye to rock and roll music.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend says he is done with the genre and is looking to venture into new music avenues.

Stewart, who has been in the music business for over six decades, shared the news in a recent interview with BBC Breakfast.

British television host Charlie Stayt interviewed the Maggie May singer alongside Culture Club’s lead singer, Boy George in anticipation for the duo’s upcoming tour.

Stewart’s announcement was prompted by a comment Stayt made where he marvelled at the musician’s long-spanning career, stating “rock stars are performing into incredible ages now”.

The Sailing singer abruptly chimed in to reveal, “I am actually stopping’.

“I’m not retiring but I want to move on,” he clarified to the shocked host.

“I had great success with The Great American Songbook…and I’ve just done a swing album with Jools Holland, which is going to come out next year, so i want to go in that direction”.

Stewart told Forbes in June 2022 that he was collaborating with pianist Jools Holland, 65, on a swing album that was more of a rock and roll style.

The Hot Legs singer performed on stage with Holland later that month at the Raise the Roof concert for prostate cancer, a disease which both Stewart and Holland have battled.

With his upcoming swing album, Stewart told BBC Breakfast that he was excited to creatively branch out into different music genres.

“I just want to leave all the rock ‘n’ roll stuff behind, for a while, maybe,” he said.

So, there is a chance the rock and roll legend might make his almighty return to the genre, but for now, we can expect his music to take on a different sound.

“I’m really looking forward to doing something else, especially singing with Jools’ band,” Stewart added.

“It borders on rock ‘n’ roll anyway, it’s just not Maggie May and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”

After Stayt commented that “no more rock and roll” hits from Rod Stewart felt like “the end of an era”, the icon had this message for fans:

“Everything has to come to an end sooner or later,” Stewart said.

While Stewart might be leaving rock and roll behind, he has assured that fans can expect to hear some classic hits on his upcoming tour with Boy George and Culture Club this year.

In April, Stewart announced on social media that his “dear friend” Boy George, 62, would be joining him for his shows in England and Scotland.

“Come on, come on, come on, come on, come along on the tour with me”, Stewart sang to the tune of Culture Club’s smash hit, Karma Chameleon.

In the announcement video, George revealed his personal connection to the famed Rock and Roll singer, sharing that his mum bought him The Killing of Georgie in 1976 ” to let me know she knew I was other”.

“She let the music do the talking”, the singer shared.

Stewart and George will embark on their UK tour on June 24 in Plymouth.

“We’re gonna have fun, we’re gonna sing The Killing of Georgie together” Stewart recently shared in a video of the pair to Instagram.

“It’s going to be amazing,” George chimed in, joking that fans should “bring a hat”.

On his upcoming tour, Stewart confirmed he will perform solo shows in Edinburgh on July 7 and 8.
