Robert Downey Jr. says he would ‘happily’ return to his role as Iron Man

For those who needed three business days to fully recover from Avengers: Endgame, brace yourselves.

Robert Downey Jr. has spoken with Esquire and revealed that he hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of returning to his iconic role as “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist,” Tony Stark – a.k.a. Iron Man.

The Oscar winner shared that he would “happily” return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying that “it’s too integral a part of my DNA.”

“That role chose me,” he added. “And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

Now, if you’re an Iron Man fan you’ll know that unfortunately Downey Jr. won’t be returning to any Marvel movies set in the future since we all know how Avengers: Endgame ended for the beloved character.

But that doesn’t rule him out from appearing in a flashback, a cinematic move the MCU is known to be a fan of.

There’s also the possibility of him appearing in another universe – another popular MCU move – where he hasn’t actually died yet.

But for now, we have nothing to go off except those few words of hope from Downey Jr. himself and our own wishes and prayers.

In his Esquire profile, Downey Jr.’s onscreen wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, also appeared to give her own insight into working alongside the iconic actor in the Iron Man series.

“There would be this process of [director] Jon Favreau and Robert and I going into Jon’s trailer in the morning and Robert being like, ‘I’m not f—ing saying these lines’ and throwing them out,” she shared, speaking on the fact that the actor is known to improvise a lot of his work.

“I think in order for something to feel alive for Robert, it has to feel fresh,” she continued. “And he makes it fresh by making it feel like it was just invented. So many of those famous lines were written 10 minutes before we said them.”
