Richard Lewis jokes about death in his final Curb Your Enthusiasm appearance

A clip of late actor Richard Lewis joking about death has become especially poignant after his passing was reported this morning, aged 76.

Taking place during his last appearance on the show Curb Your Enthusiasm, where he played a fictionalised version of himself, Lewis engaged in conversation with his friend Larry David, telling him that he was included in his will.

The scene begins with David telling Lewis he was getting better at golf as he overheard a pro giving advice, saying, “I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

Lewis then rebutted, ”I have better news for you. I’m leaving you in my will. I’m tweaking it, and you’re in it.”

David continuously insisted Lewis give it to someone else who needs it and that he wouldn’t accept, but Lewis didn’t agree.

“When I die, I want you to know how much I cared about you,” the late actor said. “You’re my best friend. You’re getting it.”

Later on in the episode, David brought up the will issue again.

He said to Lewis, “You know, it’s kind of starting to dawn on me what’s going on. You’re putting me in your will because you want me to put you in my will,

Lewis then said, “Are you out of your f—ing mind?”, asking whether David though he was “shallow and that manipulative.”

Lewis called it a “low point in their friendship,” but David insisted he would put Lewis in his will, with the two discussing what each person gets.

David then asked Lewis, ”By the way, what makes you think I’m going to die before you? You’re a little ragged right now. I’m in a little better shape than you.”

“You think that? Oh really,” Lewis responded. “I’m going to outlive you by 20 years.”

Variety confirmed this morning that Lewis’s death was due to a heart attack.

David released a statement in the wake of his friend’s death, shared by HBO to Variety.

“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” he said.

“He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
