Rejected Man Utd star who played just one league game and was sent on NINE loan moves now slugging it out in League One

FORMER Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos is now starring for Wigan in League One.

Amos, now 33, joined United’s academy in 2001 and became a regular starter for the club’s Under-13’s in his first season.

He progressed up through the age groups before making his competitive first team debut in September 2008.

His first appearance for the Red Devils came in a League Cup clash with Middlesbrough.

Amos played the full 90 minutes as Man Utd cruised to a 3-1 win.

However, he had to wait until the 2011-12 season to make his Premier League debut.

The goalkeeper’s first, and ONLY, top tier appearance came in a 2-0 win over Stoke at Old Trafford.

But he struggled to cement his place in Sir Alex Ferguson‘s starting line-up.

David De Gea was then introduced to the team, meaning Amos fell further down the pecking order.

The goalkeeper was sent out on loan six times during his seven-year spell at Old Trafford – to Peterborough, Molde, Oldham, Hull City, Carlisle and Bolton respectively.

He then secured a permanent move to Bolton, but was limited to just 53 appearances across all competitions after being loaned out a further three times to Cardiff, Charlton and Millwall.

Amos spent two years at Charlton after completing a permanent transfer in 2019 and now plays for Wigan, where he became a first team regular.

He made 48 appearances and kept 17 clean sheets during his first campaign.

And last season he was involved in a further 31 first team outings.
