Rare 1977 Ford Capri which was first EVER model with family-friendly boot hits auction for eye-watering price

A RARE Ford Capri, the first-ever model to feature a family-friendly hatchback boot, has hit auction for an eye-watering price.

The MkII model earned the moniker of the “European version of the Ford Mustang” during its successful production run in the 1970s.

Developed with a shorter bonnet and more compact style in response to the 1973 Oil Crisis, the MkII introduced a hatchback-style rear door.

This made it an ideal family car, as the boot was as easy to access as it was spacious.

Powered by Ford’s hallmark Crossflow inline-four engine, it was no slouch either and was renowned for being one of the more reliable cars of the era.

Its near best-in-class power was improved further with the introduction of a 3-litre V6 to the powertrain in later years, with that being the engine the particular car up for auction contains.

The motor was restored extensively in 2004 and comes with a current MOT and a service history dating back to the early 2000s.

Auctioneers Car and Classic believe it to be one of just 13 MkII 3.0S models still on the road, with a further 14 registered but off the road through SORN.

Inside, there is a stylish orange check trim, while many of the components are original.

The spare wheel and jack are also present and in good condition.

The listing for the car reads: “Known as the European version of the Ford Mustang, the Capri is loved by many, and it’s easy to see why.

“With its 3.0 litre Essex V6, this model was the more desirable one to own.

“This an excellent opportunity to own a 70s classic in fantastic condition.

“Ready to jump into and enjoy? What are you waiting for?”

However, all that appeal comes at a hefty price, with a guide of £11,750.

At time of writing the auction is ongoing with 8 bids in.

It is set to finish tomorrow at 8pm, with a reserve price in place.
