He added: “I like what I do.”
McCarthy continued: “Some writers have said in print that they hated writing, it was just a chore and a burden. I certainly don’t feel that way about it. Sometimes it’s difficult but you always have this image of the perfect thing which you can never achieve but which you never stop trying to achieve.”
Of The Road, McCarthy said he had “no idea” where the story was going.
He said inspiration for the novel came from sitting in a hotel room in Texas with his young son sleeping nearby. The author began looking out the window at night wondering what the city may look like in the future.
“You can’t plot things out. You just have to trust in, you know, wherever it comes from,” he explained.
No Country For Old Men won four Academy Awards including Best Picture. McCarthy attended the event, much to the delight of his fans.
McCarthy wrote twelve novels, two plays, five screenplays and three short stories during his career, becoming known for the Western and post-apocalyptic genres.
McCarthy is survived by his son John.
