Prime Video’s “The Power” Trailer Paints a Dystopia Where Teen Girls Can Electrocute Anyone

Power is a slippery thing in the trailer for Prime Video’s new series “The Power.” Based on the bestselling novel by Naomi Alderman, the show imagines a world where teenage girls suddenly develop the ability to electrocute people at will. As girls around the world discover and harness their new power, they transform the society around them.

The show’s sprawling cast includes Toni Collette as Mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez, John Leguizamo as her husband, Rob Lopez, and Auli’i Cravalho as their daughter, Jos Cleary-Lopez, but the series’s action spans the globe. In the first trailer for the series, released on Jan. 31, Margot, panicked, explains on the phone, “Teenage girls are developing a new organ.” “One that generates electricity,” Rob adds. At a press conference, Margot warns, “This is not a hoax.”

Santigold’s “Go!” then plays over clips from the series with lyrics like, “People want my power / And they want my station / Storm my winter palace / But they couldn’t take it.” Meanwhile, the girls graffiti outlines of their hand prints with black paint. “This power is evolution,” Margot declares of the changes. We then see Jos using her own power to turn on her school’s fire alarms and gangs of girls getting together to try out their newfound skills. In one shot, they seem to blackout an entire city.

“Every revolution starts with a spark,” the trailer warns as it shows women around the world using their powers to rise up. “I was living in constant fear,” Jos explains. “Now I feel 100 times stronger. Can you imagine that kind of freedom?”

“The Power” is one of many book-to-TV adaptations for the streamer, including March’s “Daisy Jones and the Six.” Ahead, find out everything we know about “The Power” so far, including the show’s release date.
