EDDIE HOWE has been tipped to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

The Newcastle boss has been given the nod by former Three Lions striker Peter Crouch.

Southgate, who has been in charge since 2016, is contracted until the end of 2024.

However, the FA have confirmed he will remain manager beyond next summer’s Euros in Germany.

When the times comes for Southgate to be replaced, though, Crouch believes Howe is the ideal candidate.

“Eddie Howe has been mentioned [for the England job],” he told Paddy Power.

“I know Newcastle fans won’t thank me for that, but I think he’d be good. I don’t think it needs to be someone who has played for England.

“I think a good young manager could be a great option, and I feel like he’s someone who could carry that young team forward and that cohesion that Gareth built.

“He’s not someone who would come in and create too much of a stir. He’d do well with the FA, the whole structure of the youth setup, and I think he’d keep that kind of ethos that Gareth has built.”

Howe guided Newcastle to safety after taking over at St. James’ Park in November 2022.

He was rewarded with a new long-term deal last summer before sealing a return to the Champions League in his first full season as manager.

According to reports, however, the former Bournemouth boss is currently not interested in becoming England manager.

As for Southgate, England have made it to at least the last eight of all three major tournaments during his tenure.

Those performances include fourth place at the 2018 World Cup and the final of the Euros in 2021.

His side sealed their place at Euro 2024 earlier this month, with the draw for the finals scheduled for December 2.
