Plymouth Superbird seen in Pixar film to sell for HUGE sum at auction – 50-year-old motor can hit an eye-watering 185mph

A RARE Plymouth Superbird which featured in a classic Pixar film has gone for sale for a whopping £147,000.

The blue motor, built in 1970, was one of just 2,000 made and can hit a top speed of 185mph.

The model with its iconic nose cone is well known for circuit racing boasts an impressive 0-60mph of 5.5 seconds.

But it became even more famous when it appeared in animated form in the 2006 children’s film Cars.

He is a 1970 Plymouth Superbird with a bright Dinoco-blue paint scheme.

Now, this Superbird is being sold at auction by Bring a Trailer in Slidell, near New Orleans, Louisiana, US.

Over five decades old, it has a 4.4litre V8 engine and has done 91,000 miles – just 1,685 per year.

The car underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 2005 before it was purchased by the seller in 2010.

The listing reads: “This 1970 Plymouth Superbird is one of approximately 2,000 examples produced for a single model year between October and December 1969.

“It was completed on November 30, 1969, and spent time in Tennessee before it was purchased by John Vaughn, a Chrysler Corporation Space Division engineer assigned to conduct wind-tunnel testing during the development of the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird.

“The car underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 2005 before it was purchased by the seller in 2010.

“Finished in blue over white vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a 440ci V8 paired with a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission and an 8.75″ Sure Grip rear end with a 3.55:1 final drive.

“Features include a nose cone, a rear wing, a black vinyl roof, power-assisted steering, front disc brakes, Rallye 15″ wheels, and a push-button AM radio.

“Modifications consist of an aluminum radiator, a 16″ cooling fan, a coolant-overflow tank, and a PerTronix electronic ignition system.

“Service performed in 2023 involved replacement of the voltage regulator, the reverse-light switch, and the headlights.”

The auction ends on February 10.
