Pep Guardiola invites ‘one of greatest of all time’ Wayne Rooney to Man City after United legend’s shock revelation

PEP GUARDIOLA has told Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney he would be more than welcome to come and see how City work.

The former England captain, 38, said this week he would ‘walk’ to the Etihad if he got the chance to be an assistant to Pep.

And the ex-Barcelona chief says the door is always open to the ‘Red Devil’ – who is looking to get his managerial career on track.

He is flattered that Rooney spoke so highly of him after achieving so much during his playing days.

Asked about Rooney’s comments, Guardiola, 53, said: “I don’t know where he lives. It’s Cheshire? So it’s close.

“He can come any time, he’s more than welcome.”

Guardiola has spent eight years in England and knows how highly regarded Rooney – who has already had spells in charge of Derby, Washington DC and Birmingham City– was as a player.

He said: “For our city, of course he’s important, but he is a Red Devil, he is United but of course it’s nice for all of us.

Wayne Rooney has been one of the greatest in this country of all time, so if he makes compliments for all of us, it’s nice.

“He was working around here for many years – so he knows.

“He won a lot of Premier Leagues.

“That means he knows how difficult out is to be up there and that’s why he knows how difficult it is.”

Rooney suggested that Guardiola would be a good manager to learn from.

The retired striker also pointed out the work Mikel Arteta is doing at Arsenal.

The manager has rebuilt the Gunners since his appointment in 2019.

Arteta spent three years as an assistant coach to Guardiola.

Rooney said: “You see what Arteta is doing now and I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning what Guardiola was doing and so it depends on what the situation is.”
