‘At one point, a gust of wind threw the ladder over the wall and it hit the car of a neighbour that was in a car park.
‘The roofer said that he had insurance to cover for it, not a problem for him.
‘However, he left and did not leave any note on the neighbour’s car.
‘I wanted to do the right thing, so I left a note on the neighbour’s car to contact me so that I could explain the situation and give them the roofer’s contact and name.’
But it seems the good intentions weren’t noticed by the neighbour, who reacted angrily.
The Reddit poster went on: ‘It seems that they called the roofer, he answered, told them he would call them back later but never called and never answers their calls.
‘Basically ghosted them. And they cannot find much about him online either.
‘They are now wanting me to pay to fix the car and they say it is £3k.
‘This is a huge amount of cash and my own car is falling to pieces because I don’t have that much cash to buy a new one.
‘I would really appreciate some help on what should I do here.’
People were quick to offer their opinions on what the Reddit poster should do.
One person said: “You didn’t damage their car. They should have insurance that will cover damage or can take the roofer to small claims. You owe them nothing.”
Another said: “To put it another way. If the roofer had dented your neighbours car with his van, would you even consider paying then? Of course not.”
While a third said: “OK let us be clear here. You have no legal obligation or liability for your neighbours car.
“These are the two reasons.
“Firstly the vehicle was in a public car park not on your land.
“Secondly, you are not the person that committed or caused the damage to your neighbours vehicle.”
