‘Not right’: Barbie fans react to Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig Oscars ‘snub’

This Barbie has been ‘snubbed’.

The 2024 Oscar nominations have rolled in overnight, with outcry from Barbie fans claiming the film has been slighted in certain categories.

Barbie was the film of 2023, inspiring magenta-clad cinema visits, iconic press tour looks and dominating the global box office.

The film snagged an impressive eight nominations behind Oppenheimer’s 13 for Best Picture and supporting actor nominations for America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling.

But the Barbie movie’s leading star and director were noticeably absent in the nominees.

Margot Robbie didn’t manage to score a best actress nomination, missing out to Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Carey Mulligan and Emma Stone.

Director Greta Gerwig also surprisingly missed out on the best director gong, while the other half of ‘Barbenheimer’ Christopher Nolan made the nominee list.

People seem to be left baffled over Robbie and Gerwig’s absence, with Barbie quickly trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, with fans sharing their perplexed reactions.

“Seems really odd to me how #Barbie could be nominated for best lead actor, best supporting actress and even best film, but they don’t acknowledge Margot Robbie as lead actress (the heart and soul of the film) or Greta Gerwig as director,” someone Tweeted.

Many didn’t understand how the Aussie star, who played the star doll in the box-office hit, missed out on best actress while her costars were nominated for supporting roles.

“The fact that the supporting characters got oscar nods but the woman who played barbie herself got nothing is not sitting right with me…” one person wrote.

Ryan Gosling’s name in particular was trending on the platform as people called out the irony of the Ken actor being nominated in a film about female empowerment.

“So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie” one confused fan wrote.

“Regardless of your feelings towards Barbie as a film, how do you not even acknowledge the women who made it exist (Margot and Greta) yet nominate it for Best Picture and acknowledge its male star for both his performance and his song?” another questioned.

Others acknowledged America Ferrera, who played Gloria in the film, as deserving of a nomination, but called out the Academy for slighting her female co-star.

“As wonderful as America Ferrera is in Barbie, her now iconic monologue being recognized but not Margot Robbie’s subtle mannerism of experiencing what it is to be human is baffling. She IS the movie,” one person wrote.

Ferrera herself told Variety she was “disappointed” Robbie and Gerwig missed out on being nominated.

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” she said.

Gerwig’s ‘snub’ was also called out by fans after she famously made history with Barbie as the first woman to direct a film that grossed $1 billion at the box office.

“Greta Gerwig being snubbed at the #Oscars despite barbie being the ONLY $1 billion movie solely directed by a woman feels VERY sus to me…” one person said.
