Nicole Kidman on the private pain she felt when she won her first Oscar in 2003: ‘I was struggling with things in my personal life’

Nicole Kidman has opened up about one of best moments of her career – her very first Oscar win – and the secret pain she felt behind closed doors.

The Hollywood star, 56, who is now happily married to rocker Keith Urban, said that on the night of her career-defining win, back in 2003, she felt a deep sense of loneliness after her divorce with ex-husband Tom Cruise was finalised.

“I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well,” she said to Dave Karger in the new book 50 Oscar Nights, according to People.

Kidman explained that she went back to her hotel room with her family and realised she wanted to find the love of her life to share some of her career milestones with.

“I sat on the floor of the hotel eating French fries and a burger with my family and went to bed. That’s when it hit me. I went, I need to find my love; I need a love in my life. Because this is supposed to be when you go, ‘This is ours,'” she explained.

She added: “I went to bed alone; I was in bed before midnight. If I ever won again, I’m telling you, I’d be out for 24 hours.”

In 2003, Kidman won her very first Academy Award for Best Actress for The Hours.

The Nine Perfect Strangers star rarely discusses her 11-year marriage to Cruise.

Kidman and Cruise, 59, married in 1990 and split in 2001. They are parents to son Connor, 28, and daughter Isabella, 31.

The former couple has respected their children’s privacy since their split. In a 2018 interview with Who magazine, Kidman revealed why she rarely speaks about her two adopted children, saying she’s very protective when it comes to their privacy.

“I’m very private about all that. I have to protect all those relationships,” Kidman told the publication. “I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

The actress added, “They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”

Kidman met Urban in 2005 and the pair married a year later. They share two daughters together.
