Newcastle set to launch bid for ‘the next Hatem Ben Arfa’ as they plot transfer for Lyon’s Rayan Cherki

NEWCASTLE UNITED are reportedly interested in wonderkid Rayan Cherki from cash-strapped Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Newcastle United, who failed to sign James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai, are now targeting the 19-year-old attacker as an alternative.

The youngster received praise from Kylian Mbappé after his debut at 16, had ten goal contributions last season and sparked interest from clubs around Europe including Chelsea.

Now French publication Foot Mercato reports Newcastle are after Cherki, who scored twice for his country in the recent U21 Euros.

Newcastle’s only notable signing so far this summer has been Sandro Tonali for £55m despite the Magpies competing in the Champions League next season.

The young Frenchman could be a cheaper yet more promising option than Moussa Diaby or Harvey Barnes, who are both being linked with the club.

Lyon are famed for their youth exports, including Karim Benzema, Alexandre Lacazette and ex-Toon star Hatem Ben Arfa, with many believing Cherki is the next to be destined for greatness.

And if the transfer does happen it would see Cherki link up with former teammate Bruno Guimarães, who has became a fan favourite in the north east.

Cherki can play as an attacking midfielder or winger on either side, can use both feet, and is known in France for his outrageous skills and technical ability.

His versatility can provide competition to Miguel Almirón, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock, who have all been utilised on the wing or behind the striker.

Cherki would add to the new crop of players such as Sven Botman and Alexander Isak who propelled Newcastle to their first cup final since 1998/99 last season.

According to the reports in France, Newcastle have offered £17m for the teen, who has two years left on his contract.

He is thought to be worth around £25million on the market, however Lyon’s financial struggles could see them forced to sell.
