Newcastle plan £35m transfer move for former Man City star, who has struggled after leaving Premier League

NEWCASTLE UNITED are reportedly eyeing a swoop for former Manchester City star Ferran Torres.

The 23-year-old forward was snapped up by Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens back in 2020 from Valencia.

Newcastle are allegedly chasing Barcelona’s Ferran Torres in a £35m transferRex

He went on to score nine goals in the Premier League and lifted both the title and Carabao Cup during his two years at the Etihad.

Torres’ displays in England also led to him breaking through into the Spanish side, where he has gone on to hit the net 17 times in 38 caps for his country.

However, the lure of a return to his homeland with Barcelona proved too strong as he completed a £55million transfer from City in January 2022.

He scored seven times in his first 26 appearances but he fell out of favour following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski just months after joining.

Now cash-strapped Barcelona are looking to offload a number of players to help balance the books, and Torres is allegedly one of those they would look to cash-in on.

And Fichajes claims that Newcastle “would be interested” in giving the attacker the opportunity to return to the Premier League.

They state that an offer of around £35m would be enough to secure the services of the star.

The publication reports that Barca chiefs feel that Torres’ performances “have been clearly below expectations” and that he “could be one of the first sales” they make in order to fund a new raft of signings themselves.

Newcastle are hoping to secure Champions League football for a second-successive season this term, especially with the top five in the Prem looking set to qualify.

Eddie Howe’s side currently sit seventh, five points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa, while their hopes of reaching the knockouts in Europe hang in the balance.

They are bottom of Group F after last week’s defeat in Dortmund, and they face a difficult trip to Paris Saint-Germain next before hosting AC Milan in their final group match.
