NEW players have won the last two North American Pokémon regional championships.
Regional championships are important in the world of Pokémon VGC, as players use these to collect points and take part in the World Championships in Yokohama, Japan.

North American players need 350 championship points in order to be invited to the World Championships.
As a player earns 200 points for winning a regional title, one win will put them over halfway towards their goal.
Justin Tang, the winner of the Knoxville regional championship, had never entered an official Pokémon event before.
Tang used Flutter Mane, Arcanine, Iron Hands, Amoonguss, Palafin, and Gothitelle to win his title.
More in Pokémon
All of these Pokémon are popular in the format, and Tang had a number of popular plays during his run, including Perish Trap, and Trick Room.
The core of his team was Palafin, who could deal large amounts of damage with Water-type terastallization, and the Mystic Water item.
The winner of the Vancouver regional championship, which took place over the weekend, was first-time player Abdullah Mohayyuddin.
Mohayyuddin used the team that achieved fourth place at Knoxville with a number of small adjustments.

The team includes Torkoal, Lilligant, Great Tusk, Kingambit, Dragonite, and Flutter Mane.
This team’s core is leading with Torkoal and Lilligant, as Torkoal sets up the sun immediately and doubles Lilligant’s speed.
Lilligant then uses After You to allow Torkoal to move first with a full power Eruption.
Both players won over seasoned players to take home the title. Wolfe Glick won the Orlando regional championship and is a former World Champion who came in fifth at Knoxville.
Aaron Zheng attended Vancouver. The five times regional champion and World Championship commentator ended up in fourth.
The new season is exciting for players who are new to Pokémon VGC, as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet allows players to share teams with others.
It also is very VGC-friendly, making it easier for players to build teams than ever before.
