MERCEDES-Benz has released a newly redesigned EV which it claims can do an incredible 551-miles on a single charge.

It’s also good news for passengers in the back too, thanks to a huge update.

The Mercedes EQS was billed at the brand’s flagship all-electric EQ and now it has been given a mid-life refresh this year.

The German manufacturer says it isn’t a facelift but a model year update, which could indicate further tweaks for the EQS are planned at some point.

With the original version, it was fitted with a 108kWh battery capacity but now that has been boosted to a 118kWh one, which only helps boost the car’s range.

The new trim is focused more on a traditional front-end design, with the iconic three-pointed star badge on the bonnet – and there’s a whole load of new tech kit inside.

The bigger battery is the new-look car’s most significant feature.

While the old EQS had a maximum range of a rather impressive 441 miles, this has now been upped to 511 miles in the 450+ version.

The pumped up battery includes new cells within an unaltered casing, so while it is a more energy-dense unit, the packaging remains the same.

Those new cells should arrive on other EVA2-based EQ models in the near future, according to Mercedes.

So it’s likely the EQS SUV and EQE along with the EQE SUV to be given a boost in range too.

Helping to give a boost to the extra range is a now standard-fit heat pump, improved energy recuperation and a disconnecting front electric motor for the 4MATIC models.

The performance stays the same though, with the 450+ going from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds due to its 355bhp.

The 450 4MATIC takes 5.6 seconds and the 500 4MATIC does it in 4.8 seconds.

While the 580 4MATIC with its 544 bhp only needs 4.3 seconds to hit 62mph.

The brake cylinder has also been modified to get a better brake pedal feel.

There’s also a whole load of new design features, with the head of vehicle development for the Mercedes EQS, Holger Enzmann, telling Auto Express:  “Mercedes has listened to customer feedback on the EQS”.

First off, there’s a new front-end look offered on “Electric Art Line” trim levels, that sit alongside AMG Line.

It features the three-point star on the bonnet and there is a new faux grille design with horizontal strips.

It also gets new-look headlights, which has also been added to the AMG Line EQS.

Inside, the enormous hyperscreen has now been fitted as standard and comes with the latest Mercedes MBUX infotainment system.

According to Mercedes, rear legroom was an issue with EQS buyers and they have now allowed the rear backrest to tilt by up to 38 degrees, up from 30 degrees.

The rear passenger, on the non-driver’s side, now also has a button to fold the front passenger seat forward to get even more space.

The seats themselves now have been altered too, coming with 5mm of extra padding.

The car is due to arrive later this year and prices for the Mercedes EQS will start at £112,610.
