McDonald’s Happy Meals now come with £1 book tokens – as parents urged to save them for World Book Day

MCDONALD’S has added £1 book tokens to its Happy Meals – as parents are urged to save them for World Book Day.

The giant fast-food chain brought in the vouchers from February 15 until March 31 as part of its Happy Readers scheme.

A bargain hunter took to social media to remind parents about the money-saving deal.

In a Facebook post, she said: “Don’t forget to keep the £1 Book Token from your children’s Happy Meal Box World Book Day on the March 7.”

Those ordering the £3.89 Happy Meal will get a £1 World Book Day token with their toy, drink, side and main.

You can then go into the shop and swap it for one of the 12 books available for free.

Dozens of parents took to the comments section to share their excitement.

One penned: “No doubt I’ll go in the holidays.”

Avid readers can choose from a wide variety of authors and different stories.

In previous years, diners could choose books written by Anthony Horowitz, Onjali Q. Raúf, Matt Haig and Beth Reekles.

But if any of the books from the list doesn’t appeal to you, fear no more.

Customers can also use the token to get £1 off a book or audiobook costing at least £2.99 at some retailers.

All you need to do is rush to your nearest branch and buy a Happy meal this month.

You’ll have to then take the token into a local participating bookshop or supermarket.

Customers can find your nearest one by searching for your postcode on the Booksellers Association’s website.

The offer has been released in partnership with charity World Book Day, which has distributed over 300million tokens to children across the UK and Ireland.

Gareth Helm of McDonald’s previously said: “We are incredibly proud of our Happy Readers scheme, with over 90million books given away to families across the UK and Ireland since 2013.

“Our partnership with World Book Day is yet another way in which we are making it easier for families to enjoy reading together.

“We hope the distribution of World Book Day tokens on our Happy Meal boxes will encourage even more families to share a story and celebrate the magic of reading together.”

McDonald’s has around 1,200 branches across the UK. You can find your nearest one by using its restaurant locator tool.

But this is not the only treat the big retailer has under its sleeve this month.
