Mauricio Pochettino ‘wanted shock Hugo Lloris transfer reunion at Chelsea’ amid goalkeeper chaos in turbulent off-season

CHELSEA considered a move for Tottenham stalwart Hugo Lloris last month, according to reports.

The Frenchman worked under Mauricio Pochettino for five-and-a-half years in North London.

Lloris, 36, has one year remaining on his contract at Spurs.

But he is out of the first team picture and seeking a transfer.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea contacted the former Tottenham captain regarding a potential transfer last month.

The Blues had intended to go into the season with Kepa Arrizabalaga as their first choice goalkeeper, with new signing Robert Sanchez as No2.

On the eve of the new season they allowed Kepa to move to Real Madrid, however, after the Spanish giants’ first choice Thibaut Courtois suffered a serious injury.

This saw Sanchez promoted to No1, with the Blues unexpectedly on the lookout for another stopper.

They reportedly considered a swoop for Lloris that would have seen him move across London to reunite with old boss Pochettino.

Eventually they scrapped the move in favour of signing Djorde Petrovic from New England Revolution instead.

Petrovic came recommended by Chelsea goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts.

Lloris, meanwhile, still hasn’t had his future resolved.

Following a conversation with Ange Postecoglou at the beginning of pre-season, the veteran stopper skipped Spurs’ pre-season tour to look for a move.

A transfer has since failed to materialise, with Lloris still training at Hotspur Way.

Should he remain at Tottenham beyond tonight’s deadline he is unlikely to be named in their 25-man Premier League squad.

Spurs have replaced him as first choice with new signing Guglielmo Vicario.

While deputy Fraser Forster was selected against Fulham in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Lloris joined Spurs from Lyon in 2012 and was subsequently appointed first team captain in 2015, a role he would hold for eight years.

He made 447 appearances for Tottenham in total, captaining them in the 2019 Champions League final.

The decorated keeper also captained France to World Cup glory in 2018, earning 145 caps for Les Bleus before calling it a day after last year’s tournament in Qatar.
