Manchester United tweeted a touching tribute that read: “Sending our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of former Red Mark Pearson, who represented United in the late 1950s and 1960s.
“He will always hold a special place in the hearts of those at the club.”
Their statement continued: “His part in a unique chapter in Manchester United’s history is indelible, and everyone at the club would like to pass on sincere condolences to Mark’s family at this sad time.”
Fans were also left saddened by the news, one said: “RIP to the legend.”
Another added: “Remembering the legacy of Mark Pearson. Our condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
A third wrote: “He will always be in our hearts.”
Pearson was a versatile player that was pushed into the Man Utd team following the Munich air disaster, starting the emotional first game back versus Sheffield Wednesday in 1958.
The then 18-year-old and fellow debutant Ronnie Cope put in special performances and The Times wrote: “They left us rubbing our eyes in astonishment.
“Their maturity, polish, and skill left one wondering what other magic is hidden away in Old Trafford.”
Pearson was soon dubbed “Pancho” due to his sideburns and went on to make 80 appearances for the club.
He was dropped from the side when crash survivors Bobby Charlton and Dennis Viollet returned to action.
The signings of Albert Quixall, David Herd, Denis Law and Johnny Giles meant he eventually left United.
In 1963 he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £17,000 before a subsequent move to Fulham.
Pearson leaves a widow, Susan, and two daughters, Jackie and Sarah.
