It’s among the most iconic magazine covers of the noughties.
In 2003, some of the most famous tween and teen idols in Hollywood graced the cover of Vanity Fair, representing a thrilling cross-section of early 2000s pop culture.
The cover featured – in order – Amanda Bynes, twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Mandy Moore and Hilary Duff.

At the time, Bynes was wildly popular thanks to her Nickelodeon shows, the Olsen twins were at the height of their post-child star fame, Moore was still riding the high of her debut single Candy and Hilary Duff’s pop career was exploding.
An extended spread of the magazine cover included Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel, actress Emma Roberts, Disney star Raven Symone and actress Lindsay Lohan.
On face value, it looked like these famous young women were the best of friends. But according to Mandy Moore, not all was what it seemed behind-the-scenes.
Reflecting on the cover during an episode of the podcast Not Alone, the This Is US star, 39, said there was “a lot of drama” on the set of the photoshoot.

“A lot of teenage drama, for sure,” Moore said.
“There was a fight over a boy I wanna say between two people, I don’t even remember who. I remember feeling like a real outlier and outsider like, ‘I am not a part of the cool kids club.'”
She said the feeling on set was one of “animosity” and “tension”.
Moore also recalled “one of the Olsen twins” had a crush on her boyfriend at the time, which made the actress feel “cool”. “I was like… ‘oh well, I pick them good then!’.”
It’s unclear who Moore was referring to, however the singer did date tennis star Andy Roddick between 2002 and 2004.
Looking back at the shoot 21 years on, the Candy singer says she and Duff “laugh about that all the time”.

Nowadays, she and the Lizzie Mcguire star are close friends.
“We were such babies then and to think fast-forward 20 years from now… our husbands are best friends,” Moore said. “She’s a very, very dear friend to me.”
Duff was also asked about the Vanity Fair cover in 2022 during a lie detector interview.
She described the shoot as a “high stress” environment: “I remember being like, ‘This is cool I was included in this,’ but no, this was a very high stress, anxiety-inducing day.”
“Also, Mandy [Moore] and I are great friends now, so this is very funny.”
