Man Utd ‘working on record Diogo Costa transfer’ as they try to tie David De Gea down to new deal

MANCHESTER UNITED are prepared to break a transfer record to land Diogo Costa, according to reports.

The Red Devils are targeting a new keeper as they look to strengthen their team.

But the club are also reportedly keen on tying David de Gea down to a new deal on a reduced wage rather than replacing the Spaniard completely.

AS report that United are working on getting a deal done for Porto keeper Costa, who is enjoying a great season in between the sticks.

They add that the Portuguese press are speculating United are working towards a deal that could even cost more than the £72m that Chelsea paid for Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018.

This would mean Costa could break the transfer record for a keeper.

But the report adds that other clubs are interested in the 23-year-old stopper.

Reports had indicated that United’s pursuit of new goalies meant that de Gea’s time at Old Trafford was coming to an end.

The 32-year-old’s £375k-a-week deal expires at the end of the season but Old Trafford chiefs have reportedly indicated a willingness to trigger an extension.

United want to reduce de Gea’s wages to closer to £100k, according to AS, but negotiations are taking some time.

But Erik ten Hag has made clear he is a fan of the Spaniard, who has been at the club since 2011 and experienced seven United managers.

Ahead of the Nottingham Forest clash tomorrow, ten Hag said: ” I am very happy with David.

“He is only 31 years old, he is fit and he can progress even more.

“He was already impressive with United and will be in the future.”
