The 35-year-old has been training with Man Utd throughout pre-season and has clearly done enough to impress boss ten Hag.

The Red Devils are short on numbers defensively with Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia all out injured.

Evans is returning to United after spending seven years with the club between 2007 and 2015.

The Northern Ireland international made 198 appearances for the Manchester giants winning three Premier League titles and a Champions League.

He returns after spending the last eight years with West Brom and Leicester.

Man United are also looking for more defensive reinforcements with a deal for Spurs defender Sergio Reguilon on the verge of completion.

The Spanish left-back is set to join on a season-long loan as ten Hag looks for a short-term replacement for the injured Shaw.

United had been sniffing around Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, but The Blues’ decision to play the full-back in their Carabao cup clash with AFC Wimbledon saw any potential deal come to an end.
