The Red Devils’ 2023-24 third kit is all-white with red trim.

With Villa also wearing white shorts, however, the Red Devils used their alternate third kit for today’s game, which features red shorts instead.

Prior to this season, Man Utd had not worn red shorts since 1957.

And they had never worn red shorts with a white shirt in their entire history.

Both records tumbled in November when they played Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Having used it in Europe, United gave their alternate third strip its Premier League debut at Villa Park.

And fans appeared to love it.

One wrote on social media: “United’s white tops red shorts combo is working for me.”

While a second gushed: “Think it’s the first outing for the Red/burgundy shorts for the men’s first team they look very smart/classy.”

The alternate third kit’s previous outing saw United draw 3-3 with Galatasaray in their ultimately doomed Champions League group stage campaign.

Its second appearance got off to a better start, with Rasmus Hojlund firing the Red Devils into the lead on 17 minutes.

And Ten Hag’s men went in at the break a goal to the good against Unai Emery’s top-four chasers.
