Man City break silence over pulling out of Declan Rice transfer chase with midfielder close to sealing Arsenal move

MANCHESTER CITY have broken their silence after missing out on Arsenal-bound Declan Rice.

The two title rivals battled it out for the West Ham captain before the Gunners had a £105million bid accepted.

City pulled out of the race to sign Rice as they refused to meet West Ham’s big demands.

And chief executive Ferran Soriano has revealed City will not panic when it comes to transfers or be pressured into making signings.

He said at a sponsorship event: “If you look at what we did at the start of this project, there was a need for a lot of changes and investment – but not anymore.

“If you look at what we have done in the last five years, our level of investment in new players is well thought out.

“We are not the top net spenders of last year or the last three or five years. We have a platform where we know what to do and we can do it with time and intelligence.

“When we don’t like a deal, we walk away and we don’t panic.”

City bid as high as £90m for Rice, plus add-ons, but the Hammers turned down the offer.

They wanted assurances Rice was keen to join them before increasing their offer, but the England star reportedly wanted to join Arsenal.

Now City will likely focus on other targets having already added to their midfield with the signing of Mateo Kovacic.

Celta Vigo youngster Gabri Veiga has caught the eye and the Citizens could activate his £34m buyout clause.
