The tech company employs 220,000 people worldwide – 6,000 of which are in the UK.
Around 10,000 jobs are expected to be cut – equating to roughly 5% of its total workforce.
Microsoft has yet to verify this figure, but we’ve asked for more information and will update this story when we know more.
It also remains unclear if the jobs cuts will affect staff worldwide or whether they’ll affect UK-based positions.
The expected layoffs would be the latest in the U.S. technology sector, where companies including Amazon and Meta have announced job cuts.
Job losses have come as a result of slowing demand and a worsening global economic outlook.
Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft said: “These decisions are difficult but necessary.
“They are especially difficult because they impact people and people’s lives—our colleagues and friends.
“We are committed to ensuring all those whose roles are eliminated have our full support during these transitions.”
