Major car firm to launch electric-only ‘little daughter’ of popular off-road model – and can be charged in 15 minutes

A MAJOR car firm is set to launch an electric-only motor dubbed the little daughter of an already hugely popular off-road model.

The smaller version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class can be charged in just 15 minutes and is on course to be a total gamechanger in the EV market.

The model will be developed by car greats Mercedes and their new specialist “G division”.

They’ve already made the iconic G-Class and the upcoming Mercedes EQG, making the new, smaller motor the third star in the ever expanding G range.

The model was first confirmed by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius at the Munich motor show, where he dubbed it the “little G” before saying it was “a son or daughter of the iconic big G”.

Design chief Gorden Wagener told Autocar that the new motor will follow in the footsteps and keep the “iconic DNA” of the existing G-Class cars.

Wagener said: “It will have its own character, but it will be a G.”

Mercedes technical chief Markus Schäfer also spoke about the model at the recent CES in Las Vegas as he shrugged off suggestions that the model would be a hybrid with internal combustion engines.

The “little G” is expected to be released in 2026.

The car will continue to offer true off-roading ability of its predecessors and use a reworked version of the existing ICE G-Class’s ladder-frame chassis and be powered by four powerful electric motors.

The baby G is set to be a crucial final reason as to why the Mercedes sub-brand – the G class – is an established powerhouse in the motorcar market.

Joining greats like the Maybach and AMGs.

CEO Källenius said last year: “Most luxury companies build their portfolio on the basis of one or two true icons.

“Mercedes-Benz has the good fortune to have multiple iconic products and brands at the upper end of its portfolio, such as the S-Class, the SL, the G-Class as well as the AMG and Maybach brands.

“We see great potential here to expand our top-end portfolio with even more fascinating products.”

The new compact SUV is thought to have an 800V electrical system that allows for 248miles of range off a fully charged 15 minutes.

The mini G-Class is also expected to offer a choice of a lithium-iron-phosphate or lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide batteries with impressive capacities of between 58kWh and 85kWh.

It comes after an ultra-luxurious Mercedes van boasting on board fridges and surround sound was shown online.

But it’ll cost you an arm and a leg with its mammoth price tag.

The amazing motor has been created by high-end coachbuilders Clive Sutton as a unique and discreet driving experience.
