He wasn’t afraid to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of the team and then axed him from the squad for the trip to Chelsea after he refused to come on against Tottenham.

And Ten Hag once again showed who’s boss after leaving Rashford out of the team against Wolves despite his excellent goalscoring form of late.

The England star eventually came off the bench and scored the winner at Molineux before explaining that he was dropped for being late.

Shaw described his England and United team-mate as “world class” but said that Ten Hag dealt with the situation in the right way.

He said: “When you’ve got a player like Marcus Rashford to come on, you know there’s a goal there.

“He’s in a really good place at the moment: confident, positive, happy.

“It’s nice to see it. He’s world-class, and if he keeps going he can be one of the best in the world.”

On Ten Hag’s discipline, he added: “At a top club it has to be like that. People can’t do whatever they want.

“Maybe that’s been part of the problem in the past.

“If you’re not keeping the standards high, you won’t play.”

United’s victory at Wolves saw them leapfrog Tottenham and climb into the top four for the first time since February.

Ten Hag’s side have now won five games on the bounce in league and cup ahead of their clash with Bournemouth on Tuesday.
