A chaotic start to the event saw all the cars bunch up while approaching the first turn.

But as Hamilton and Russell vied for space, they ended up clipping each other.

Both Formula One stars went spinning off the track at lightning speed.

However, Russell was able to drive back into the action as Hamilton was left stranded with a damaged car.

The seven-time world champion, who turned up to the race in a very questionable outfit, lost his rear-right wheel.

And he was forced back to the paddock to watch the rest of the race from Mercedes’ team base.

Hamilton did not seem too happy with the incident, which came a day after Max Verstappen wrapped up a third straight world title.

He complained on the team radio: “Yeah, I got taken out by my own teammate.”

Upon his return to the paddock, Hamilton told the BBC: “I mean I could see those guys, it was a fine line, sorry to all the team back at the factory.

“[Soft tyres for a quick start?] I had no other tyres.”

Hamilton then spoke to Sky Sports, adding: “In the heat of the moment I mean I didn’t really understand what happened I just felt the tap from behind, I don’t think George probably had anywhere to go.

“It’s just one of those really unfortunate situations, I’m happy to take responsibility.

“Everyone is working incredibly hard so it’s just massively gutting to have a result like this. It’s very rare that this happens for me but I hope George is able to get back into the points today.”
