Kylie Minogue surprises fans with role in UK coverage of Matildas World Cup semi-final against England

Kylie Minogue has surprised fans with a special role in the UK’s coverage of the Women’s World Cup semi-final.

The Aussie icon, who lived in London for three decades before recently moving back to Melbourne, appeared during the BBC’s coverage opener – saying the words of one of her biggest hits.

Minogue wasn’t seen on screen but her voice was heard as she spoke the lyrics of I Should Be So Lucky in poetry style over footage of Australia and England.

The montage also featured moments from the Lionesses’ and Matildas’ previous World Cup games spliced in as they both fought to get to their first final.

While it may seem like an odd mix, the lyrics from the 1987 song fit in perfectly with the footage as Minogue narrated: “In my imagination there is no hesitation, I dream about you all the time.

“In my mind a celebration, the sweetest of sensation, thinking you could be mine.”

After the former Tourism Australia ambassador finished, BBC commentators were quick to claim her as their own, calling Minogue an honorary Brit.

Fans on social media loved the little homage from the Padam Padam singer.

“The BBC does pre-match football montages like no one else,” one person wrote. “Kylie reading the lyrics to I Should Be So Lucky is what we all need right now.”

Another wrote: “Kylie Minogue and football are two of my most favourite things. Whoever pulled this off needs a raise.”

While one fan labelled Kylie a “philosopher” and added: “My 80’s baby heart is happy!”

Sister Dannii Minogue was also watching the game but left little doubt who she was cheering for, sharing a video on social media of her match day treats – green and yellow iced cupcakes with “Go Matildas” written on them.

Kylie didn’t share who she was cheering for on social media, instead promoting the 35th anniversary for the release of her debut album, Kylie, which featured the song I Should Be So Lucky.

The anniversary comes as the performer sold out her November to January Las Vegas residency at The Venetian when tickets went on sale last week.

Kylie later announced more dates to keep up with the demand, stretching the show through to May next year.

And in a few weeks time, there’ll be even more reason for the singer to celebrate, when she releases her long-awaited new studio album Tension.
