Kylie Minogue admits she was ‘miffed’ by Neighbours return after big finale

Kylie Minogue has revealed her reaction to news of the Neighbours return.

The Aussie soap, which turned the pop icon into a household name during the 1980s, wrapped up last July after 37 years on-air.

Minogue, who played Charlene, and her on-screen husband Jason Donovan, who played Scott Robinson, both flew back to Melbourne from their lives in the UK to film a cameo in Ramsay Street for the show’s “last-ever” episode.

Just months later, in November, the series announced it’s return, leaving the Padam Padam singer “miffed”.

“Yeah, ‘happy’ is probably not the emotion,” she admitted to Tay FM Scotland’s Garry & Steven in an interview, when they joked the finale was a big “waste of time”.

“You know, ‘miffed’ may have been the word.

“But I know with the producer, he’d said, it wasn’t [coming back]. They genuinely didn’t know. So all the affection and love that went into the final episode was truth.

“I’m happy for them now and I’m interested to see how it’s going to change.”

The series’ surprise return also impacted Hollywood star Guy Pearce, who similarly made a cameo in the finale, with his character Mike Young moving back to Ramsay Street to live with former love Jane Harris (played by Annie Jones).

Pearce recently promised fans he’d make a guest return in the new series for continuity but it wouldn’t be a long stint.

“There may be a little appearance or two, shall we say,” Pearce, 55, told the Sydney Morning Herald‘s Good Weekend Talks podcast.

“I was a little thrown by that,” Pearce admitted on the podcast of the show’s reboot announcement, four months after the finale aired.

”[Jones] and I called each other, ‘What do we do now, because we’re living in the street’.”

Jones told Pearce it’s not a big leap for her, considering she’s still on the show, but he admitted they’re still “in the process of working it out” for his character.

”Obviously, if I’m going to extricate myself from the show, I want to do it respectfully,” he said.

Original cast members including Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney and Jackie Woodburne have all signed on to reprise their roles as residents of the famed street in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough.

The reboot series is currently in production and will air around the world from later this year.

In Australia, the series will return to Channel 10 for first-run episodes but will be available a week later on Amazon Prime Video, which will also host the series for viewers in New Zealand and Canada.

Devotees of the soap in the UK and US will be able to watch it on Amazon Freevee.
