However, it has now been revealed that Mbappe never even considered extending his contract.
In a statement to AFP, Mbappe has now revealed he informed the Ligue 1 Champions of his decision to leave LAST YEAR.
The statement read: “I have NEVER discussed any contract renewal with PSG.
“The board has been informed since July 15th, 2022 of my decision not to extend beyond 2024 — and the letter sent was only meant to confirm what I already told them.”
Mbappe’s deal, reported to be worth over £500million, runs through to 2024 and has an optional extension clause inserted which would take him up to 2025 if triggered.
But with Mbappe affirming his desire to leave, following L’Equipe’s letter revelation, this has sparked a frenzy among Europe’s financial powerhouses.
And it left Manchester United fans salivating at the prospect of Mbappe joining the club this summer.
It comes after a sensational report in Qatar claimed Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani had won the race to buy the club.

Reports earlier today suggested Chelsea had joined the Red Devils in the race to sign the Frenchman.
Another recent report suggested Mbappe could join Erik ten Hag‘s side as a part of a sensational swap deal with Jadon Sancho.
Regardless, PSG will not allow their talisman to leave for free.
According to The Times, if PSG are forced into a sale, they would hope to agree a deal which would allow them to keep Mbappe for another season.
Manchester City were another club who had a registered interest on Mbappe, but following the signing of Erling Haaland, it seems doubtful City would move for the former Monaco man.
Real Madrid would be the natural favourites to sign Mbappe this summer given his admission of being a supporter.
The case for Spanish giants has also been strengthened by the departure of Karim Benzema, who left Madrid for Al-Ittihad in the Middle East.
Last season Mbappe scored 29 Ligue 1 goals and added a further seven in the Champions League and five in the French Cup.
