Kathy Griffin reveals she’s been diagnosed with ‘extreme case’ of ‘complex PTSD’

Comedian Kathy Griffin has shared some personal news after almost six years out of the spotlight.

The 62-year-old revealed on her TikTok account that she has been diagnosed with an “extreme case” of complex PTSD.

“Let’s talk about PTSD. Never talked about it publicly,” she began her video. “You can laugh or whatever, but I’ve been diagnosed with complex PTSD, and it’s called an extreme case.”

“If any of you know my story, you’ll understand that this really started for me about 5 ½ years ago. Wink,” she shared, seemingly referencing the 2017 photo where she posed with a bloodied replica of then-US President Donald Trump’s head, which led to a huge career fallout.

The two-time Emmy and Grammy Award winner was promptly dropped from a number of stand-up and TV opportunities, including the chance to co-host CNN’s New Year’s Eve special, and was even investigated by the Secret Service and put on a “No-Fly” list.

The Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List star said that the scandal also led to a personal setback, with her not leaving her home for months and “taking any prescription pill I could get my hands on,” she penned in a Newsweek op-ed.

In the TikTok video, she bluntly continued, “And the cancer didn’t help,” referring to her 2021 stage 1 lung cancer diagnosis.

She then asked the audience to provide suggestions on “how to cope” with depression and anxiety in the comments, with some of her TikTok followers commenting their support and advice.

“I love your honesty and resilience. Keep being you!” one commenter encouraged.

“The trauma you experienced was public and awful and undeserved. And events since then only complicated things. You are so important to so many people,” said another.

“You being so vulnerable and honest will help all of us who suffer with mental health issues (including) PTSD,” another added.
