Some punters were also quick to share snaps of the new crisps online after spotting them in store.
A picture of a five-pack was posted on the NewFoodsUK Facebook page and Instagram account, with the caption: “New Walkers BBQ Pork Ribs Crisps now available at B&M Stores.”
And some shoppers pleaded with the crisp giant to make an urgent U-turn.
Responding to the photo, a few people bemoaned Walkers’ choice, and claimed they would have preferred the crisp giants bring back an old favourite instead.
One viewer wrote: “Just bring back BBQ… the UK needs a good start to 2024.”
Another said: “I really need to know if they taste like the discontinued BBQ Ribs.”
The customer, who later bought a pack, updated her review: “Just purchased a pack, not terrible but wouldn’t buy again not to my taste and unfortunately they don’t taste like the BBQ Rib ones they discontinued which I am gutted about.”
Despite, some being disappointed with the flavour, other punters left positive reviews of the crisps.
Some users were left baffled that the crisps were said to be suitable for vegans, but have a meaty flavour to them.
One said: “I don’t understand. Are they supposed to taste like vegan ribs or are they just vegan?”
All of Walkers’ core range are suitable for vegetarians but not all of them are suitable for vegans.
The disappointing axe comes after Walkers already told fans they were stopping production of salt and vinegar Quavers, Walkers Max Flamin’ Hot, the Peking Spare Rib oriental crackers, Worcester Sauce crisps, and Regal Mint & Lamb Sensations.
In the latest blow, Cheese Mixups have also disappeared from shop shelves.
The mashup bag included Tangy Cheese Doritos, Cheese and Onion French Fries, Cheese Bugles, and Wotsits.
The heartbreaking news for crisp fans came to light on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The crisp brand also revealed that it’s made a major change to the recipe of its Thai Sweet Chilli Sensations – and fans are not happy about it.
Crisps are not the only treat facing the chop either.
It comes after other companies decided to discontinue fan favourites.
Nestle decided to axe Drifter bars along with Caramac.
A Nestle spokesperson told The Sun: “We are very sorry to disappoint fans of Caramac. There has been a steady decline in its sales over the past few years and we had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.
“We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will enable us to focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight our consumers’ tastebuds.”
Walkers have been contacted for comment.
