Julian Sands’ family thanks local department after eighth unsuccessful search

Julian Sands’ family has thanked search and rescue crews after renewed searches for the actor have been unsuccessful.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department shared a statement from the Sands family, almost five months after the A Room with a View actor, 65, initially went missing while hiking in California in mid-January.

“We are deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian,” the statement read.

“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”

The statement comes just 24 hours after another unsuccessful search and rescue operation took place across Mt. Baldy, where the actor went missing almost five months ago.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the latest search was conducted on Saturday (Sunday in Australia) by more than 80 search and rescue volunteers and deputies, two helicopters and drone crews.

“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” the department said of the renewed operation in a statement.

“Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10-plus feet [approx. three metres] of ice and snow.”

The department has conducted eight searches for Sands since his disappearance in January, as well as eight non-related searches within Mt. Baldy.

Since Sands’ disappearance, multiple family members have spoken out and thanked the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for their continued search efforts.

“I am hugely appreciative for all the efforts made so far from the volunteer search and rescue climbers and the San Bernardino county sheriff team to bring my father home,” Henry Sands, the actor’s son, told the Times in April.

“He has not yet been declared missing, presumed dead, but I know in my heart that he has gone,” Sands’ brother Nick told the UK’s Craven Herald & Pioneer in January.

“However sibling rivalry being what it is, it would be just like him to walk out of there and prove me wrong.”
