Judi Dench recalls the awkward moment she accidentally FaceTimed her daughter’s friend while naked: ‘Happy birthday!’

Dame Judi Dench has recalled the awkward moment she accidentally FaceTimed her daughter’s friend while naked, while trying to send a birthday message.

The iconic actress, 88, made an appearance on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 this week when she recalled the hilarious incident.

The Skyfall star said she’s not good with using her mobile phone and tried to send a birthday message while having a bath, only to shock the people on the other end of the phone when she appeared on camera.

“My phone is anathema to me… I don’t know what all the buttons are for,” Dench explained.

“Fint [her daughter Tara Cressida Finty Williams] rang me one morning… and said, ‘It’s Chris Logan’s birthday and he’s having a walk with [actor] Ben Whishaw in Regent’s Park… please wish him happy birthday?'”

“I said, ‘of course,’ and we chatted… Then I went up to get dressed and ready and I went into my bath and so I picked up my phone… and I said, ‘Chris… Happy Happy’… and I just saw these two people turn and go [shocked face],'” the star said.

She added with a laugh: “Well… it was FaceTiming them… I don’t know about FaceTime… poor Chris… happy birthday!”

Last year, the Oscar-winner revealed she was diagnosed with advanced macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012, but at the time shrugged off the possibility of retirement despite grappling with vision loss.

Earlier this year, Dench revealed she’s increasingly struggling to read scripts and learn her lines, something she says used to be a breeze.

“It has become impossible,” Dench said on The Graham Norton Show.

“And because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page.”

The aforementioned eidetic memory is what Dench says she’d rely on when memorising scripts, however, without being able to physically see them, it’s since become an extremely challenging process.

Two years ago, Dench revealed she had a fall at home and went without help for 30 minutes.

In an interview with Saga magazine, Dench said it was a sobering reminder of how she is losing her independence in her old age.

“I had a frightful fall not long ago. I tripped over the carpet, and there was nobody in the house and I was lying on the ground unable to get up for half an hour,” the actress revealed.

“I have a wonderful parrot who kept saying, ‘What are you doing? What are you doing?’ This is when you need a very convenient parrot who would phone somebody, but she didn’t.”

While Dench said she initially felt hopeless, she was able to get up of her own accord half an hour after the fall.
