Henderson joined the Amsterdam giants in January from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq amid high expectations.
He has since been appointed captain but has yet to win in four appearances.
Van der Vaart, who began his successful career with Ajax, has slammed the 33-year-old on Dutch TV.
VdV, 41, fumed: “Ajax have brought in players with zero quality. The club will now have to see out the rest of the season.
“They have brought in Jordan Henderson. All he does is to play a little pass out wide, or a little pass back.
“But nobody will be happy with that.
“You’ll see on Thursday that they will get through their Conference League tie against Bodo/Glimt with all the luck in the world.
“Afterwards it’s best for them to get knocked out, and to make a fresh start next season.

Ajax is fifth in the Eredivisie, 26 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven.
NEC Nijmegen held them to a 2-2 home draw on Sunday after conceding a 95th-minute equaliser.
Playmaker Van der Vaart shone during two seasons with Spurs before joining Hamburg in 2012.
