Jon Bon Jovi will quit touring if his singing is ‘not great’: ‘And I’m good with that’

Jon Bon Jovi plans to retire if his vocal therapy following throat surgery isn’t as successful as he would like.

The lead singer underwent surgery in 2022 to repair his vocal cords following decades of performing and has been undergoing vocal therapy ever since.

“This is the first time I’m saying this,” the 62-year-old told The Sunday Times Magazine.

“If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was … then I’m done. And I’m good with that.”

The rock frontman has been performing with his band Bon Jovi since 1983 and hasn’t slowed down.

A documentary chronicling the band’s rise to fame called Thank You, Goodnight. The Bon Jovi Story is out on Disney Plus on April 26.

Their new studio album Forever drops on June 7.

Jon Bon Jovi said while he is able to record in studio, touring the album is more challenging.

“There is a big difference between being in a studio and going out on the road,” he explained.

“We have just recorded a new album. I sing in vocal therapy every day

“But I want to perform for two and a half hours a night, four nights a week – and I know how good I can be, so if I can’t be that guy … put it this way, I don’t ever need to be the fat Elvis.”

The band originated in New Jersey and is currently made up of the lead singer, drummer Tico Torres, keyboardist David Bryan and guitarists Phil X and Hugh McDonald.

Former members include Richie Sambora, Alex John Such and Dave Sabo.

They biggest hits include Livin’ On A Pray, Dead or Alive, Always, and You Give Love A Bad Name.

Jon Bon Jovi began performing at the age of 13 and said in the upcoming documentary “there was no plan b in my life, ever” as he new he wanted to perform.

“Bon Jovi was all or nothing,” he added.

They recorded their first songs at night and on weekends and it was their third album Slippery When Wet released in 1986 that catapulted them to worldwide fame, selling over 20 million copies.

The documentary shows the highs and lows of band members at the height of their fame including hard partying, the demise of relationships and marriages and in fighting.

Jon Bon Jovi has been with his wife, childhood sweetheart Dorothea, for 33 years since the couple met at the age of 18. They have four children – Stephanie, 30, and sons Jesse, 29, Jake, 21, and Romeo, 20.

Son Jake is engaged to Stranger Things star Millie Bobbie Brown.

Bon Jovi holds the record for the band with the most Top 10 singles never to reach Number 1 in the UK. They have sold 120 million records globally.
