Johnny Depp is reportedly keen to reprise his Pirates of the Caribbean role

Captain Jack Sparrow could soon be making a comeback!

According to People, Johnny Depp is keen to repair his relationship with Disney and work together on a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Though the star previously said he felt betrayed by the company, an insider says he has changed his tune: “Anything is possible. If it’s the right project, he’ll do it.”

Meanwhile, Disney is also down for a potential collaboration – last month, the New York Times reported that Disney was “seemingly inching the door open” to working with the star again.

This news comes a year after Depp’s infamous and highly-publicised defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. There were questions in Hollywood about whether Depp could return to his career following the scandalous headlines that followed him.

A former Disney exec told People at the time, “I absolutely believe post-verdict that Pirates is primed for rebooting with Johnny as Capt. Jack back on board. There is just too much potential box-office treasure for a beloved character deeply embedded in the Disney culture.”

During a cross-examination in court, Depp said that he was “shocked” and “hurt” when Disney chose to drop him from the sixth Pirates movie, an act that Depp attributes to allegations against him made by Heard.

“It was like somebody hit me in the back of the head with a 2×4… Captain Jack Sparrow was a character I built from the ground up,” he said in court. “I didn’t quite understand how, after that long relationship and quite a successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.”

Last year, producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced that they were working on two scripts for a new Pirates movie, one of which had Margot Robbie attached to star in a lead role. Bruckheimer said, however, that Depp wasn’t involved with either of those two projects.

When asked about the actor, he said “Not at this point” but “the future is yet to be decided.”

Depp was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the original 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Its hit sequels came out in 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2017.

He’s currently promoting his new film, Jeanne du Barry, in which he plays Louis XV, the king of France who ruled from September 1715 until his death in 1774.
