John Stamos reveals divorce from Rebecca Romijn ‘shattered’ him: ‘It ruined my life’

John Stamos has opened up about his “shattering” divorce from Rebecca Romijn ahead of his memoir release next week.

The Full House star, 60, spoke to People about the breakdown of his first marriage which he discusses in his memoir If You Would Have Told Me, which is out October 24.

He was ‘shattered’ over Rebecca Romijn divorce

The actor has opened up about being “shattered” for years over his divorce from first wife, actress and model Rebecca Romijn. 

“My first marriage was shattering to me. I was shattered for way too long, too,” he told People, adding he struggled for “years and years”.

“In my mind back then, she was the Devil, and I just hated her,” he admitted.

“I couldn’t believe how much I hated her, and it ruined my life.”

Stamos was married to Romijn from 1998 to 2005, and has since remarried in 2018 to actress Caitlin McHugh.

The actor says he reflected on his divorce nearly two decades ago, admitting he shared the “blame” in their separation.

“You start thinking, it’s like, ‘Oh, she wasn’t the Devil. Maybe I was as much to blame as her.'”

Romijn has previously spoken about her divorce from Stamos in the noughties after the pair were together for 10 years.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2022, the X-Men actress admitted she felt like “a failure” after her marriage ended.

It’s a very hard decision to come to when you decide to end a marriage,” she said. “It was heartbreaking.”

He was allegedly sexually abused

Stamos has made the devastating admission that he is a survivor of sexual assault.

“I felt like, I remembered it slightly. It has always been there, but I packed it away as people do, right?” he claimed to People about the alleged incident with a babysitter.

“It was like you’re playing dead, so they’ll stop. But it wasn’t totally aggressive,” he recalls. “I don’t know, it was not good.”

Stamos has long been an ambassador for ChildHelp, which provides support and treatment for victims of child abuse.

“I do so much advocacy for the [survivors],” he added.

According to the actor, writing an acceptance speech for his advocacy was when it “really came out.”
