Group 1-winning jockey Dean Holland has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a sickening race fall in country Victoria, leaving the racing world in shock.
He was riding Tony McEvoy’s gelding Headingley in the first race at Donald, 280km north-west of Melbourne when he was involved in the “sickening” fall.
Holland was sent crashing to the ground when the three-year-old gelding moved sharply to the inside rail.
He then fell as the field turned for home at the top of the straight.
Rival Alana Kelly and her horse Time to Rumble were then also brought down as the full force and weight of both animals looked to have landed on Holland as he lay prone on the turf.
Both horses appear to have escaped any injuries from the collision as they ran away from the scene while Kelly walked back to the scales.
But medics raced to Holland and treated him on the course as concerned onlookers watched on.
He was then airlifted to a Melbourne hospital in a critical condition.
Stewards abandoned the remaining races of Monday’s meeting.
The Victorian Jockeys Association said in a statement: “Dean Holland is to be airlifted to Melbourne. Injuries are critical. Further update as advised.’”
It remains unclear what Holland’s specific injuries are as the racing world came together to offer their prayers for the star.
One fan tweeted: “Thoughts and prayers are with Dean Holland and his family during this time.”
Another said: “Thoughts are with Dean Holland and his family/friends. Fingers crossed we get some positive updates.”
As a fellow concerned fan wrote: “Praying for Dean Holland, his family, and his parents Belinda and Darren.”
The veteran jockey has enjoyed a brilliant career and ridden 1080 winners, including Group 1 wins in the Newmarket Handicap in March and Australasian Oaks in Adelaide, and he has had 82 winners already this term in Victoria.
