Jaguar E-Type ‘left to rot in a barn for 50 years’ goes to auction… and the buyer’s got a real bargain

A JAGUAR E-Type that was “left in a barn” for nearly 50 years after a crash has sold for a bargain price – and it could be worth much more.

The gorgeous classic was put up for auction on eBay after decades of storage and is in need of some major restoration.

The low-slung sportster is a 1970 Coupe model and has just 47,000 miles on the clock.

Its seller explained in the online ad that it had been involved in a single-car accident in the 1970s which saw it leave the road at speed and roll into a woodland area.

The seller explained: “It has been stood in a barn since awaiting a repair that never happened, the pictures tell the story, the tub is badly damaged but probably not beyond repair as all panels are now re-manufactured.”

The effects of this are visible in the photos accompanying the listing, which show a crumpled roof and battered bodywork.

Almost half a century of barn storage has not been kind to it either, with faded paint giving way to extensive rust.

The damage is so bad that the boot door no longer fits properly into the warped frame.

Inside, the seats are torn and caked in dirt allowed in by the fact that there are no windows.

And under the bonnet, the story gets no better, with plenty of rust in the engine bay, including on the cylinder block.

This may go some way to explaining why the beautiful motor sold for just £6,750 when its auction ended on January 4.

The new owner will, no doubt, shortly collect it from its storage location in Newport, Yorkshire, and, hopefully, begin restoring it.

It would certainly be in their interest to do so if they can keep costs anywhere close to a reasonable level as an E-Type can be worth up to around £90,000 in top-class condition.

It comes after a Range Rover developed by TV icon Noel Edmonds went up for sale – including some unique features that transform it into a “mobile office”.
