I’ve visited 40 UK seaside resorts – this is the unspoilt beach town to visit before it becomes too popular

A TRAVEL expert has revealed the seaside town Brits should visit before it becomes too popular with other holidaymakers.

Travel writer and award-winning author Madeleine Bunting has spent the last two years visiting 40 seaside towns in England.

The seaside expert documented her beachside breaks in her new book, The Seaside: England’s Love Affair.

One place she recommends Brit holidaymakers should visit before it becomes too well-known is Watchet in Somerset.

Watchet recently benefitted from a £7 million rejuvenation project.

The funds were raised by a group of locals who went on to open East Quay – a habourside arts centre.

Madeleine told Sun Online Travel: “A new art centre called East Quay recently opened on the harbour.

“It’s an art centre with these fun and impressive accommodation pods that are putting the town on the map.”

According to Madeleine, the pods are already famous among holidaymakers on social media who stay to take Instagram-worthy snaps.

Inside the arts centre, visitors will find exhibition spaces, art galleries, local businesses, and a restaurant.

East Quay is home to five different accommodation pods that can each sleep between two to four people.

Each one has countryside views, and prices start from £55 per night per person, based on four people sharing a room.

There are several other places to stay in Watchet including hotels and holiday rentals.

One of those is the Hood Arms, a four-star hotel situated a stone’s throw away from Watchet.

There’s also Warren Bay Holiday Village where holidaymakers can park their campervan from £6.25 per night per person.

For those Brit holidaymakers who do stay overnight, there are plenty of things to do in Watchet.

The seaside town has two beaches including West Street Beach – a rocky beach home to fossils and a Victorian tidal pool.

Helwell Bay is also rich in fossils but is less popular among holidaymakers because of its muddy waters and quicksand warning.

Other nearby attractions include Cleeve Abbey, Doniford Farm Park, the Market House Museum, and the Watchet Boat Museum.

There are also plenty of places to eat in Watchet, including a string of restaurants that overlook the marina like the East Quay Kitchen and the Marina Cafe.

Holidaymakers can also grab something cheap to eat at Sam’s Deli and the Corner House Tearoom.

Overall, Madeleine considers Scarborough to be her favourite seaside town though.

She said of the traditional resort: “[This is] such a tough question because I enjoyed so many of them, but I think Scarborough is stunning and full of intriguing reminders of its glamorous past.”

Meanwhile, Britain’s oldest lido is set to reopen to the public.

Cleveland Pools, in Bath, Somerset will reopen on September 10 after being transformed in a 20-year campaign by the Cleveland Pools Trust.
