iPhone owners are just realising they can avoid Apple price hikes by switching to free Google rival

GOOGLE users have been urged to take advantage of a free offer of cloud storage, after rival tech giant Apple hike its prices last week.

The search engine behemoth offers 15GB of storage for free, while Apple offers just 5GB on the house.

If you’re unsure what the ‘cloud‘ is, it’s simply a place to store pictures, videos, messages – any data from your phone or computer that can’t fit inside the device itself.

That place is often in giant buildings with big servers inside that keep that data safe, and most importantly, do not take up all the storage you have on the device in your hands at home.

The free Google Drive cloud storage is applicable across Gmail, Google Photos and Google Docs.

But Google’s paid-for cloud storage service, Google One, offers 100GB for £1.59 a month, 200GB for £2.49 a month or 2TB for £7.99 a month.

The two larger plans are cheaper than Apple’s offering, which quietly rose in price for Brits by nearly a third last week.

Apple’s iCloud, which was once one of the cheapest on the market, increased prices in the UK, as well as Poland, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

50GB: Was £0.79, now £0.99200GB: Was £2.49, now £2.992TB: Was £6.99, now £8.99 

Following the hike, affected iCloud customers took to Twitter to complain, considering there had been no upgrades to the service and the cost of data storage has shrunk considerably in 15 years since iCloud was launched.

Others have accused Apple of “greediness” and unnecessary profiteering.

Nonetheless, some Brits are counting themselves lucky.

In Turkey, prices have risen by 100 per cent.

Meanwhile, tech-savvy savers have been eyeing up Google’s offering instead.

Because even though Google’s basic plan costs more than Apple’s 99p, users do get twice the storage for less than twice the price.  

Although, if you’re an avid Windows user, it might be worth considering switching to Microsoft’s OneDrive storage.
