Inside the UK’s ‘most baffling tourist attraction’ – it’s free and right by the beach

A MUSEUM in the UK has been called the “most baffling tourist attraction” – but has been given rave reviews.

The Crab Museum in Margate first opened in 2021, right next to the main Margate Sands.

Free to enter, the museum has won fans for its clever exhibits and jokes that keep both adults and kids entertained.

Run by trio Ned, Bertie and Chase, it is also the “only crab museum in Europe”.

It’s only open on Saturdays and Sundays, and they rely on donations to keep it running although there is also a gift shop for souvenirs.

The website states: “Crabs are incredibly diverse. They are tiny, huge, cute, scary, vulnerable, indestructible and millions of years old.

“They affect all of our lives in ways many of us don’t even realise – from maintaining the oceans, to helping us with important new medicines. In fact, crabs may well have already saved your life!

“Crabs can teach us about biology, climate change, evolutionary history and much much more. But, with the right frame of mind, they can also teach us about ourselves.

“This is why we created Crab Museum – to roll science, humour and philosophy into a unique and satisfyingly baffling day out.”

The museum has nearly all 5* reviews on TripAdvisor, where it calls itself the “finest, funnest little museum in Britain”.

One guest wrote: “One of the smallest but also the best museums in the area.”

Another said: “Wasn’t sure what to expect when we (a group of 8 women) visited yesterday – but this was by far the best museum I have been to in a long long time.”

A third said they hadn’t “ever enjoyed visiting a museum so much”.

One tourist even wrote: “Easily the best thing we’ve done in Margate today! It’s funny, informative and it contains more crab jokes than I thought they were.”

Others said it was the “highlight of their weekend in Margate”.

Margate is also home to one of the oldest theme parks in the UK – which has an amazing line up of shows this year.

It also has a secret beach with one of the biggest sea lidos in the UK.

Here are some other free days out across the UK to enjoy this summer.
