And Loganair is launching new flights to the island next month.

The London City flight will land at Kirkwall with a stop at Dundee Airport although passengers won’t have to get off.

Flights will take around 3hr30 and operate twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday.

Starting from April 4, flights will start from £62.

Currently, there are flights that operate from Edinburgh, which will also increase to three flights a day.

Logainair CCO Luke Lovegrove: “We are thrilled to enhance connectivity as part of an expansion programme for Orkney within our summer 2023 schedule.

“The new service to London City, as well as the increase in service to Edinburgh and the reinstated route to Fair Isle, not only bolsters connectivity for the local community but additionally encourages tourists from across the UK and beyond to visit the wonders of Orkney.”

Orkney was recently named one of Time Out’s Best Places to Visit in 2023, and has some amazing white sandy beaches.

Made up of 70 islands and islets, only 20 of them are inhabited.

The largest islands are Mainland and Pomona, which are connected by a small strip of land, with Kirkwall being the largest town and where the airport is found.

Many visit its ancient ruins with their islands being home to some of the oldest and intact Neolithic sites in Europe.

This includes the Heart of Neolithic Orkney on Mainland which are a group of Neolithic monuments, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Pods of orcas are also often spotted around the islands, with around 90 per cent of the UK sightings off the coast.

The island is also home to the shortest flight in the world – taking just 90 seconds from the Orkney islands of Westray and Papa Westray.
